Before You Give an AI Agent Access to Your Ad Account
AI automation in Google and Meta accounts is powerful and risky. Here's what I've learned about scoping permissions, monitoring for problems, and staying in control.
What is happening
AI agents that can observe, decide, and act inside your marketing accounts without a human approving each step are no longer theoretical. Automated bidding rules, budget scripts, and AI-driven optimisation tools are already making changes in accounts without anyone reviewing them in real time. The level of autonomy available to these systems is increasing fast, and the trend is clearly toward more, not less.
Anthropic recently published research on Zero Trust architecture for AI agents - the idea that rather than granting agents broad access and trusting them to behave, you scope their permissions specifically to what the current task requires. It was written for security engineers. The argument applies directly to anyone running paid media.
What I learned from this
I have been using automation in ad accounts for years and I have seen things go wrong in ways nobody intended. A budget rule set up to protect impression share that ends up inflating CPCs across the whole account for three days before anyone notices. A bidding script that behaves sensibly during the week and does something unexpected over a weekend when no one is watching.
In every case the automation did exactly what it was permitted to do. The problem was not the tool. It was that the scope of what it was permitted to do was too broad for the situation it found itself in.
What I have learned is that two things matter most when you delegate to any automated system. First, the scope of its permissions should match the task, not the maximum of what is technically possible. An agent that checks budget pacing does not need the ability to pause campaigns. An agent testing ad copy does not need write access to your audience lists. Most teams grant the broadest access that works and move on. That is where the exposure is.
Second, assume something will eventually go wrong. Not because the system is bad but because conditions change in ways nobody anticipated. The question is not whether you have set it up correctly. It is whether you will know quickly when something goes outside expected behaviour.
What I recommend for your business
Do this before you enable any new automation in your account.
Write down exactly what the automation is supposed to do and what it is not supposed to do. Then check whether the permissions you have granted match that list. Most of the time they will be broader. Narrow them.
Set up actual monitoring with defined thresholds. Not weekly performance reviews - daily alerts for spend velocity, ROAS, and impression share that tell you when something is outside the range you would expect. The gap between “something went wrong” and “we noticed” should be hours, not days.
And keep a record of what automations are running and what they are each permitted to change. You should be able to answer, at any moment, what your automated systems are doing and why. If you cannot, that is the first thing to fix.
The efficiency gains from automation are real. So is the risk when something runs outside expected parameters. Both are manageable. You just have to manage them deliberately.
