SEO vs AEO vs GEO: Why They Are Not the Same Thing
SEO, AEO and GEO are three different jobs. Here is what each one actually does, where they overlap, and how to spread your effort across all three in 2026.
People keep using SEO, AEO and GEO as if they were three names for the same task. They are not. They are three different jobs, aimed at three different surfaces, and they fail in three different ways. If you treat them as one budget line you will overspend on the easy one and ignore the two that are quietly deciding whether anyone finds you at all.
Here is how I think about the difference, and what I would actually do about it.
What SEO, AEO and GEO actually mean
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is getting your website to appear in search results. It is the original job: identify high-intent keywords, map them to the right service pages, build authority, keep the technical side clean. When someone types “best management consulting firm UK” and your page ranks, that is SEO doing its work. It is a proven, steady traffic driver and it builds long-term authority. It is also slow to show results and exposed to every algorithm update.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) is getting your expertise pulled into answer boxes and AI Overviews. The query is no longer just a keyword - it is a full question like “what’s the best consulting firm in London?” and the engine returns a written answer above the links. AEO is about being the source that answer is built from. It rewards concise, direct responses, FAQ and How-To structure, and clean schema. It gives you instant authority and works well for voice and mobile. The catch: people often get the answer without ever clicking through, and the snippet positions move constantly.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is getting cited by name inside AI-generated recommendations. When someone asks ChatGPT “which London consulting firm should I work with?” and it names you in the list, that is GEO. There is no blue link and no ranking position - there is a recommendation, and you are either in it or you are not. GEO is won by publishing clear, well-structured thought leadership with citations, and by building a presence on the credible sources AI models pull from. It is an early-mover advantage and it positions you as a trusted authority. It is also genuinely hard to measure and it lives across many platforms, not just your own site.
The one-line version
If you only remember three sentences, remember these:
- SEO = getting your website to appear in search results.
- AEO = getting your expertise extracted into answer boxes and AI Overviews.
- GEO = getting cited by name in detailed AI-generated recommendations.
Same goal, very different mechanics.
Why this distinction matters now
For twenty years the search box was the whole game, so SEO was the whole budget. That is no longer true. A growing share of queries now get answered before the user ever reaches a list of links, and a growing share never touch Google at all - they happen inside an AI assistant.
That breaks the old funnel in two places. AEO matters because the answer box now sits between your customer and your website, and if you are not the source it is built from, you do not exist in that moment. GEO matters because a whole category of buyers now ask a model for a shortlist instead of searching for one, and models recommend names, not pages.
The businesses I see falling behind are not the ones with bad SEO. They are the ones with good SEO and nothing else, who assumed the search box would stay where they left it.
How to rank higher in each
The tactics do not transfer cleanly, so treat them as separate playbooks.
To rank higher in SEO: focus on high-intent keyword clusters specific to your service, not vanity terms. Build authoritative backlinks, keep on-page content tight, and run regular technical audits with a content refresh each quarter.
To rank higher in AEO: answer the actual questions your customers ask, in 40 to 60 words, under clear headings a machine can parse. Add FAQ and How-To schema so the structure is unambiguous. Write the answer first, then the supporting detail.
To rank higher in GEO: create factual, entity-rich content that follows E-E-A-T principles, so a model can attribute claims to you with confidence. Then get your name onto the credible third-party sources AI models pull from - industry reports, reputable forums, trade publications. Being right on your own site is not enough; you have to be present where the model is reading.
What I recommend for your business
Stop treating this as one line item. Score yourself honestly on all three. Most businesses I look at are a 7 on SEO, a 3 on AEO and a 1 on GEO, and they keep pouring money into the 7 because it is the one they know how to measure.
This quarter, pick the two questions your best customers actually type or speak, and write the genuinely best 50-word answer on the internet to each one, properly structured. That single move starts working for AEO and GEO at the same time, because the same clear, attributable expertise is what both engines reward.
SEO gets your page found. AEO gets your answer used. GEO gets your name recommended. You need all three, and right now the cheapest ground to take is the two almost nobody in your market is defending yet.
